  1. He gets his workout
  2. He soaks up the morning sun.

The second point is something you should really prioritize. Pull your curtains back the moment you finish your bed. Sunlight has a significant impact on you.

  • Firstly, it kills germs and keeps your room fresh.
  • Second, studies show that the early morning light helps you stay alert throughout the day. So, soak in that morning sun. And the morning is the best time to get some sun. The later it gets, the harsher the light- and the greater is the damage done to your skin.
    Not to mention, harsh sunlight also drains you and makes you feel fatigued.

Studies show that cold showers help you stay more alert.

They also energize the body.

Also, don’t take a bath just for the sake of it. Take your time. This is important for hygiene purposes, and feeling the water cleanse your body puts the mind in a positive place.

Make sure that you take care of your body’s needs before you leave the bathroom. When nature calls- go. Otherwise, you may spend your entire day feeling uncomfortable and out of sorts.

Morning Don’ts #3 Spend too much time getting ready

Don’t you feel annoyed when someone takes a lot of time getting prepared before you go out?

Well, guess what? The same applies to yourself.

In the morning, if you spend too much time deciding what to wear or searching for that one shirt you want to wear- you will only stress yourself out.

This sets the wrong tone for the day.

Not to mention, this leads to unnecessary delay. And to make up for this lost time, you tend to skip breakfast or rush through other things- which again leads to problems.”

What should you do instead?

Plan your outfit the night before” “Steve Jobs got this down pat because he always wore the same outfit. He developed a uniform of black turtlenecks. After him, Mark Zuckerberg has become famous for developing this simple work uniform which has become his signature look.

You must think why some of the most successful people choose to stick to a look? Well, it lets them avoid spending too much time in the morning. Developing a work uniform is great because it prevents you from stressing out in the morning.

Just pick what you want to wear the following day, and set it aside. Whatever field of work you have has a set criterion for dressing up so set some templates for your looks.

For example, if you are working in a corporate office, a full sleeve shirt in a light color and dark-colored pants can be a template. You can change the color of individual items but follow the same theme for more than one day in the week. You will find that wardrobe management, too, becomes much easier when you follow the formula.

Make sure to pack your bag in advance, too- so that you don’t miss out on anything.

If you skip breakfast or just munch some snacks or food devoid of nutrition, you will find yourself feeling hungry throughout the day and will probably crave junk.

Not to mention- unhealthy eating habits come with a host of health complications.

Have a nutritious breakfast and drink water When you have a healthy meal, you are treating your body right. This means that you also have to hydrate yourself. Have plain water after you wake up rather than going for tea or coffee or any lemon water.

Instead of knowing what to do, you will end up feeling flustered and just keep hopping through tasks aimlessly.

Even if you post about your products- you should try to engage rather than sell on social media. If you want some inspiration, check out the social media for Netflix. They do a great job of talking about their movies without asking you to pay up.

Look up any brand that you like on social media. They all post regularly.

You should do it too.

See, the moment you stop posting, you lose your traction on the platform.

Any handle that updates content on the regular is favored by the algorithms and gain momentum faster.

Not to mention- social media platforms have TONNES of brands that generate a tremendous amount of content every minute. Your audience will never lack something to look at, but YOU will lose out of your audience. It’s a classic case of “out of sight, out of mind.”

Social Media NO-No #6 Overthink your content

Social media is a place where you have to be consistent. If you dawdle too much over what to post, you will end up wasting time.

Think of the Twitter handle for Merriam Webster. The dictionary is an internet legend for its funny comebacks and witty posts. But do you see it post something epic every day?

Of course not. Most days, it posts about standard stuff. That’s because the brand knows that posting regularly is more important than hitting a 100 every day.

Engage with your audience. Answer them- it shows them that you care. You can look at brands like Wendy’s, which regularly converses with its audience- and even gives some sassy replies.

Social Media NO-No #4 Posting creatives and videos that look unfinished

The world has moved ahead in terms of technology. As a result, our expectations about media and technology have changed significantly.

If you are posting photos or videos- make sure they are professionally edited and look polished. Social media is a powerful PR tool, and you want to put your best foot forward for it.

Well done photos and videos create a good impression on your audiences and are more engaging.

Secondly, good quality visual content shows that your brand is well equipped technically. In the age of technology, it is a definite plus.

Yes, even the memes you want to use. Edit them carefully.

Social Media NO-No #3 Come across as fake

Make sure there is no disconnect between your brand’s personality and its social media messaging. Be authentic.

Imagine a brand like Microsoft. If today it starts to write its posts using gangsta rap words, it will feel incongruous. Similarly, if Bill Nye the Science Guy starts using sports jargon- it will have a pretty jarring effect.

Yes, selling on social media is tricky. But you should have a clear CTA for every post that you make.

Let’s look at it this way- every post has a purpose. When you are posting something on social media, you want your audience to take some desired action. It may be something as simple as wanting them to subscribe to your channel.

If you want something from your audience, you have to prompt them to do it. Whether you want them to buy something, or click on the link or visit your website- you should always have a CTA.

Think of the popular YouTubers like That Guy With The Glasses or Yashraj Mukhate. Every post of theirs comes with a CTA. Their video descriptions will always ask you to follow, like, or share. You should do the same.

Social Media NO-No #1 Act like a billboard

After doing all that, here is the most important tip for you- INTERACT. Your social media handles are not static billboards- your job doesn’t stop after you put up a post.

You have to engage your audience actively. You have to find new ways to initiate conversation. How can you do it?

  • Go live from time to time
  • Conduct relevant polls
  • Ask them questions
  • Take questions from them and address them in your posts and videos
  • Post behind the scene stuff to give your audiences a chance to be participants in your brand’s story
  • Tag people
  • Conduct contests
  • Put up puzzles
  • Ask for their feedback
  • Give a shoutout to, share, and cross-promote other relevant social media handles and users.

The more you do this, the more activity you are likely to see. Start slowly- and with time, diversify your posts so that you can initiate more conversations.

So without wasting any time I am now going to tell you the 6 action steps you can take to improve your public speaking skills.

Step #1 Write something EVERY DAY!

Tim Ferris is a New York Times bestselling author who interviews successful people who have made a mark in their respective fields. When asked which was the most common habit of successful people, Tim replied that 80% of his guests practiced journaling their thoughts and ideas in some form or the other.

Writing down your thoughts, ideas, and even fears every day is a very helpful practice.

When the time comes to express your thoughts verbally and publicly you will be surprised by the clarity and confidence this exercise will give you.

To inculcate the habit of journaling, you can start by writing your everyday thoughts and ideas in a diary or notebook.

And once you feel confident at expressing your thoughts, try engaging on conversational social media platforms such as Twitter, Linked In, and even Facebook groups.

Step #2: Learn from the LEADERS & the LOSERS.

First and foremost you need to know what good communication looks like. Watching speeches online is a great way to learn public speaking with effective communication. Ted Talks are a great place to start.

Remember when you do your research that there are excellent and mediocre people in every field.

Seek out both.

Learn from the excellent speakers what to include in your own scripts. And learn from the worst what blunders to avoid. This is called inverted thinking. Looking at the worst possible outcome can actually help you avoid it.

Components of a Speach

Try to analyze the impactful speeches. You can learn what works and what does not work.

Every speech has an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.

Introduction

And here is what you should look out for IN THE INTRODUCTION:

1. How did the speaker grab the attention of the room?
2. Did they start with a relevant question that the audience identified with?
3. Or did they lead with a personal story?
4. Or maybe they kicked off the speech with a factual shocking statement?

Body of the Speech

And now, here is what you should look out for IN THE BODY OF THE SPEECH

1. How did they present their opinion?
2. Did they simplify his arguments?
3. Did they use personal stories to make a connection with the audience?
4. How often did they pause midway? Why did they do that?
5. Did they use any visual aid to convince the listeners?
6. How often did they use metaphors, analogies, and symbolism to add clarity and simplify complex thoughts and ideas?

The conclusion of the speech

And finally here is what you should look out for IN THE CONCLUSION OF THE SPEECH

1. Was their conclusion clear, concise, & memorable?
2. Did they connect it back to something in the introduction or simply drive home the main point of their presentation?
3. Did they include any call-to-action and did it inspire you to take action?

Body language in public speaking

Observe the speaker’s non-verbal or body language as well. Here are some things you should pay attention to:

  1. Eye Contact
  2. Posture
  3. What do they do with their hands during the speech?
  4. If they made a mistake, how did they recover from it?
  5. What kind of clothes did they wear?

Some speakers seem naturally talented. However, no matter how easy it looks, they have no doubt put in hours of practice into their talks.

And you, my friend, will need to do the same.

Step #3: Observe successful communicators around you

Watching established leaders & speakers is good. But at the end of the day, we will need to apply what we learn in our daily life with our peers and colleagues.

We are not looking to give speeches to them but we want to learn and practice being more effective communicators.

Is there a person who is friendly with everyone?

Someone who is an absolute favorite of the bosses and colleagues alike? Someone, you want to be like? If yes, then observe them.

See how they approach people and how they approach a topic.

  1. Observe if their body language is open and welcoming. Do they smile often?
  2. How do they grab attention and converse in a group?
  3. Notice their confidence and way of standing. A confident posture can impact how people see you and perceive you.
  4. How do they excuse themselves from conversations?
  5. How do they communicate when they are annoyed or upset? Do they raise their voice to dominate the conversation? Or do they remain calm?

Study the confident communicators around you. Pay attention to how they navigate complex situations and the words they use to explain complicated ideas.

Step #4: Record Yourself Speak

Enough learning! We have now reached the action-taking stage.

It’s time to make your first speech to the camera and record it.

You can try answering questions. Refer to the topics or questions you wrote in your journal in the very first step.

But let me warn you, the first time you might need to take even 50 retakes.

However, don’t give up just yet. Once you complete the first recording, it just gets easier and easier from there.

I promise.

Doing this regularly on a daily basis will soon skyrocket your confidence and put you on the path to being a spellbinding speaker.

Step #5: Start Outreach

Reach out to 1 new person every week.

Suresh Venkateshwaran, my boss in my former marketing manager life, once told me that the fastest way to get what you want is by getting to know the people who are doing what you want to do.

Now the chances are that the people you get in touch with are very cautious of who they reply to. So this exercise will force you to get your outreach message right.

Linkedin is a great platform to start your outreach efforts. The platform will limit your message to 300 words for any new connections you make. This will force you to become precise and make every word count.

Step #6: Teach To A Group

Volunteer to teach whenever you can.

Teaching other people anything will make you an authority in that subject and give you the confidence to speak publicly about it.

I have taught everything from digital marketing, SEO to online advertising to new joiners, and experienced the learning journey of team members of my now 6-year-old digital firm.

Even today, I take out 3-4 hours every week to mentor team members.

I even teach my clients the basics of advanced strategies in branding, advertising, sales and distribution, and more.

Here’s what you get if you teach others:
