WHAT IS KEYWORD

What is a keyword?

Unless you have been living under a rock, you must have heard about “keywords”. If you have a website, you know that you have to use keywords in your content if you want to feature at the top of Google search results.

But what is a keywords?

What is a keyword? When you want to look up some information online, you type some words or phrases in the search box and press enter. The search term that you entered is a keyword.

And how can you use them to your advantage?

Keywords are like references. When you search for something, it serves as a reference point for other words and topics. The search engine looks up what information is available about the terms you searched for and gives you the results.

Keywords in content In simple terms, keywords are topics and concepts which indicate what your content is about. If any reader Googles about these ideas or topics, Google will give him a link to your website because the content on it has information on that topic.

Think of keywords as magnets. They attract search engines when someone is looking them up.

For eg., let’s take the word “Mickey Mouse.” If you have a blog post about Mickey Mouse, Google will return that result.

However, if you have another post where you talk about Disney characters; in which you also mention Mickey, Google will pull up that page too- even though it is not directly about Mickey Mouse.

What does a keyword do?

Keywords act like connectors. They serve as the link between what people are looking for online and the content that you have posted.
Keywords help you get traffic for your website.

The smarter you are with using keywords, the more (and better quality) of traffic you will attract.

So, what kind of keywords should I use?

This depends on how well you understand your target audience.

For example, when someone is searching for “pizza”- what are they looking for? Do they want a recipe? Or are they looking for a pizza joint nearby?

If you know your target audience, you will be able to use the right keywords in your blog post and attract the desired traffic. If you have a cooking blog, you should include keywords that are related to recipes. If you are a restaurant, you should use keywords which will help your local customers discover your website and place orders or find directions for your shop.

How do I know which keywords to use?

You will need to compile a list of keywords that you think are relevant to the topic you are writing. Brainstorm, visit other sites which have posted content on similar topics and talk to people. Make a list of relevant keywords, and use them to write good content.

You can also find out which long-tail keywords to use. These are keywords that are formed by a combination of simpler terms- which narrow down the scope of the search.

For eg; you can combine the words “cat café” and “India” – and get the attention of people who are looking for cat cafes in India and not Japan.

Keyword research tools In order to get better results, you need to find out which keywords have high search volumes.

This is where good keyword research tools come in. Tools like Google Keyword Planner (and many others) can help you come up with the right keywords, tell you which have higher search volumes and your competition’s keywords.

Information like that will help you craft better content, attract more traffic, rise through the search rankings and beat the competition.

Why are keywords important? Keywords are a crucial part of your content strategy and SEO practices.
